Street Sign Reflectivity Requirements

Street Sign Reflectivity Requirements

Posted by Thomas on Jul 29th 2013

Retro reflectivity is the ability of a material to return light to its source at night. Street signs must be reflective in order for drivers to safely see them a reasonable and safe distance away. The reflective surface allows the light from the headlights to reflect back to the driver’s eyes. This is an important safety matter when considering residents in communities. The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) states that retro reflectivity street signs signs are mandatory on any roads where the public is invited to travel, whether public or private property. Make sure your community is up to code with the FHWA Street Sign Safety Guides located on the FHWA website. This is valuable information to have because you don’t want your street signs below standards in your community and they could cause issues for you legally.
